• Do your flip phones support group texts and picture messaging (MMS)?

    It depends on the device.

    • The BLU Tank Flip is talk and text only, no data, so it doesn't support group texts or picture messages. Every message and group thread comes through as an individual text.
    • The Nokia 2780 and HMD Barbie Flip both support Wi-Fi and slow data, which means they can send and receive group texts and MMS when connected. As simpler devices, media may display more basically than on a smartphone, especially over slower connections.

If group texts and photos matter to your family right now, the Nokia 2780 or HMD Barbie Flip on Step 2 or 3 of the ladder is the better starting point. If you're looking for the simplest possible first phone with the least distraction, the BLU Tank Flip is intentionally limited in this way.

  • Why don’t you offer unlimited data?

Because unlimited data for kids was never really about families. It was a revenue model with a downside that got handed to parents as a parenting problem. More data means more usage, more usage means more revenue, and none of that math was built around your child's development.

eq telecom plans are capped and graduated on purpose. The limits are the point. They teach habits rather than enable consumption, and they grow with your child's demonstrated responsibility, not their appetite.

  • How does the 5-step device journey work?

The journey is the core of what eq telecom does. It starts as simple as it gets and builds from there as your child earns more access over time.

Step 1: Talk and Text only. A flip phone. Calls and texts, nothing else. From $5 a month.
Step 2: Add Wi-Fi. Internet access at home, off everywhere else.
Step 3: Add Slow Data. Maps and messages when they're out. Too slow for feeds and social apps.
Step 4: Smartphone with Slow Data. More access, with the same data discipline.
Step 5: Full Access. When you know they're truly ready, not when the industry decides they should be.

Each step is yours to give when it makes sense for your child, not on anyone else's timeline. See the full journey: eqtelecom.com/about-us/#5step

  • Is eq telecom only for kids?

Not at all. A flip phone works just as well for a grown-up who's tired of being glued to a screen as it does for a kid who hasn't gotten there yet. Our Talk & Text and slow data plans are a genuinely good fit for anyone who wants a phone that doesn't compete for their attention every few minutes. If you're curious about what would work best for you, reach out and we're happy to help.

  • Is eq telecom similar to Bark, Gabb, or other kid phones?

Not quite. Most kid-phone services start with a smartphone and add monitoring and filtering tools to manage it. eq telecom starts earlier, before the smartphone. Our 5-step device ladder begins with a simple talk-and-text flip phone and gives kids more access as they earn it, over years, with parents in the driver's seat.

The difference isn't just the device. It's the whole approach. We're not in the business of surveillance sold as safety. We're in the business of maintaining open parent-child communication by while age-appropriate independence, built one step at a time.

  • Can I track my child’s location with eq telecom?

Our flip phones don't have GPS tracking built in, and that's by design. eq telecom is built around a different idea: a talk-and-text flip phone means your child is reachable by call at any time, which for most families does more for real peace of mind than a location dot that can be inaccurate anyway. The check-in replaces the tracker.

That said, your account page does let you see who has been contacting your child, so you're not flying blind. You just don't have always-on monitoring, because we don't think that's the right tool for building the trust and open communication that actually keeps kids safe as they get older.

  • What if my child loses their phone?

Sorry that happened, first phones get lost. To handle a lost or stolen phone:

    1. Log into your account and suspend the line to prevent unauthorized use.
    2. Contact our support team for a replacement SIM or device.

For after-hours help, email customersupport@eqtelecom.com with "lost phone" in the subject line and we'll prioritize the response.

  • How do I cancel my service?

You can cancel anytime in your account portal or by contacting our support team. No penalties, no early termination fees.

If you want to take your phone number with you, we'll provide an account number and PIN so you can port to another carrier.

  • Can I use third-party apps like Uber, Maps, or social media?

This depends on the device. Our simple flip phones (BLU Tank Flip, Nokia 2780, HMD Barbie) are designed without app store access or full smartphone capabilities that's by design. The in-built friction naturally discourages phone over-use.

If you bring your own smartphone on a BYOD plan, all apps work normally. Our plans pair well with BYOD smartphones when you want app access but want the data caps to keep usage in check.

  • Is roaming included? What about international travel?

eq telecom plans are designed for use within the United States. You don't need to do anything special when traveling domestically, your phone works anywhere our network has coverage.

International roaming isn't currently included on our plans. If you're traveling internationally, contact our team and we can talk through options.

  • Can I change my plan if my child’s needs change?

Yes. Plans can be changed anytime through your account portal. No contracts, no penalties. As your child moves through the 5-step path, you can adjust their plan to match.

  • What plans does eq telecom offer for adults?

What plans does eq telecom offer for adults?

    Two adult tiers:

    • Balance plans ($25, $35, $50) - Capped data with automatic speed management. Designed to help adults build healthier phone habits without going off-grid.
    • Premium plans ($25, $35, $50) - High-speed data with a hard cap. Same price as Balance at each tier, different approach: Balance shapes habits with speed shifts; Premium gives full speed with a cap that keeps the plan honest.

All adult plans include unlimited talk and text.

  • What plans does eq telecom offer for kids?

Junior Starter ($5/mo) - Talk and text only, no data. The right first phone.
Junior Data ($10/mo) - 1GB of slow data with automatic speed management. The next step when your child is ready for more.
Unplug ($10/mo) - 1GB of higher-speed data with a hard cap. For older kids ready for real data access, but not unlimited.

All kids' plans include unlimited talk and text. You can also mix plans across family members on one account.

  • Why don’t you offer monitoring features like other kid-phone brands?

    A few reasons.

When kids feel watched, they get better at hiding. Surveillance teaches evasion — the same skill parents are trying to prevent.

Earned freedom makes honesty easier. When more access is something a kid works toward, there's less reason to sneak. The structure does the work that a monitoring app can't.

Healthy habits outlast any control app. Parental controls expire the day your kid moves out. Habits don't. We're building for the long timeline.

Parents who constantly have audit their kid's phone feel like a compliance officer. We built a plan that doesn't require that role.

  • If you have nationwide coverage why do you sell in only a few states?

This is one of our most-asked questions. The short answer:

    • Coverage is nationwide. Once you're an eq telecom customer, your phone works anywhere on our partner network across all 50 states.
    • Sign-up is currently limited to five states: Utah, Idaho, Arizona, Florida, and Ohio.

We're growing state by state to keep our service quality high. If you're outside our sign-up area, you can join the waitlist to be notified when we open in your state.
